    Sometimes when my phone is in my pocket & the screen is off, my Droid Maxx will be quite hot when I go to use it.

    Perhaps something is syncing, or something else is going on. As an experiment, switch on Airplane Mode for a while and see whether it still gets hot.

    Turn off your wifi, airplane mode, sync, bluetooth, etc. Force close all apps you're not using.
    Then only turn on the bare minimum functions you need.
