I currently have a samsung galaxy s5 running on the Cricket network. At&t just released a new update for lollipop 5.1. when I check for updates it says there isn't any and to check back in 24hrs. Do I have to wait longer to get the update since Im on cricket or is something wrong.

Probably. Bigger Carriers get them first. Probably will be Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and THEN the prepaid customers. Postpaid take priority since we have an agreement for sometimes 2.5 years.

Cricket as a prepaid carrier is treated separate from AT&T. The updates are pushed through the carrier, and since you are on Cricket and not AT&T, you can't receive the update through OTA at this time. You'll either have to wait until Cricket releases the update, or flash the stock AT&T firmware via Odin.
