How to recover lost space in an android tablet?

I have an android tablet with 16 gb of internal memory from which 11.8 gb is usable. But it is showing less free free space available then actual. I selected all the folders and went to properties , there its showing only 8.95 GB memory is occupied but on the home page the file manager is showing that only 900MB is available out of 11.8 GB that means 2GB space is missing. How can I recover this space?

Can you able to root the tablet? If you can do it, you could install a folder explorer app and remove anything that you don't need. Also, if the tablet have a sd card slot, considering buying a sd card for extra space.
