Welcome to Android Central! First, you need to make sure you can carrier-unlock that phone. Which carrier was your friend on?

Second, not all prepaid plans allow you to bring your own phone (e.g., Boost won't let you). Do a search for "[prepaid plan] bring your own phone" to see what their policies are.

Third, you'd need to make sure the phone is compatible with that prepaid plan's network bands. For example, a Verizon HTC One M8 (which is a CDMA phone) may not work on a plan that uses a GSM network.
