today it went from 18% to 3% in about 5 min. I put it on charge & turned it off. turned it back on to read while charging &home screen showed charge at 76%. do not understand how it charged from 6% to 76% by just turning it on.

Welcome to Android Central! It does sound like the battery is starting to fail. Battery lifespan depends on lots of different factors, including your usage patterns (frequent deep discharges can shorten the overall lifespan), temperature (frequent overheating or hot operating temps aren't good), and defects. You probably need to get the battery replaced.
