Note 5 issue: Silent mode not working when speakers plugged in

I plug my Galaxy Note 5 into speakers at night to play relaxing sounds while I sleep. Unfortunately, even if I have my ringer turned off, calls will ring through the speakers. My girlfriend has a Note 5 and she also experiences the same issue so I suspect this is a common problem either with the phone or with Android 5.1.1. I just upgraded from a Note 2 so I have no experience with recent versions of Android. Any info, ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
