Welcome to Android Central! Which device? How much Internal Storage do you have available? It might have more to do with the Email app itself bumping up against some preset size limit, if there is plenty of Internal Storage left. Can you try deleting some emails?

This kind of thing can occur if you're using a POP3 server from your email provider, since POP3 physically downloads your email onto the phone, which takes up space. IMAP servers are better, if your email provider uses them (and all modern email providers should). With IMAP, your phone syncs with the server rather than downloading emails.
