My parents own an LG L39C Android phone that is set up as a pay-as-you-go Tracfone to save money. ($23 every three months for cell service)

SPECS: Android version 4.1.2, LG software version L39Cv10a

Can this phone be updated to a newer version of the Android OS? If so, is it easy to do or more trouble than it is worth? Would this mess up their proprietary Tracfone connection?

If it is possible and practical, what do I have to do? My parents have no tech skill.
