Welcome to Android Central! Which device do you have? Keep in mind that the Recent Apps list is not an official "task killer." Although swiping away some of the apps in the list may in fact remove them from RAM, other apps may have already been cleared out of RAM.
In addition, it's not usually necessary nor advisable to manually close apps out of RAM, unless those apps are malfunctioning. Android prefers to keep RAM relatively full, so closing an app out of RAM will cause the system to reopen it or some other app soon afterwards. If you do it a lot, you might actually contribute to battery drain, since this process does take a little bit of energy.
