Ok here is the story of my poor Galaxy s5. I had to park my sister's car and my phone fell out of my pocket and at first I thought it fell between the seat and the door. However that was not the case. I found it on the street and the screen was destroyed. The screen is black but the vibration and bottom lights (menu/back) buttons still work. I have an app on my Mac called "Android File Transfer" that I use to put music on my phone and to take out pictures too. But I do not know where or how to take out my SMS data out of the phone. Can someone please help me.

Oh and I was so close for March, the month where the new Galaxy s7 will come out! Grrr

I understand your situation. I used my USB to connect to my computer and extracted any photos but to extract your SMS history I'm not sure. Maybe someone else can help you there. I fell on my s5 and had a hairline crack but the screen stayed black but those lights on the bottom stayed on.

The MHL cable would only show you the image of the screen of your phone on the TV. This will not allow you to do anything, only look at you wallpaper and any notifications you have there.
