I have moved several apps to my SD card but if there is an update to the app it moves back into the device memory so I am constantly having to move them back to the SD card. Is there another way to avoid having to repeat these steps to clear device memory?

Welcome to Android Central! No, this is how it has to be done, since apps always have to install to Internal Storage first before being moved to the microSD card. It's presumably different on Marshmallow, on devices that can use a microSD card as adoptable storage (i.e., making the SD card an integral part of Internal Storage).

As B. Diddy said, keeping applications on an SD card has been made as annoying as possible under Kitkat (4.4) and Lollipop (5.0/5.1). Maybe it will be fixed with Marshmallow (6.0). Guess I'll find out in 8-10 months when I get 6.0 on my AT&T Samsung S5.
