My phone will not allow number input during automated calls

When asked to input a number on automated calls I can bring up the number pad but it disappears when my finger approaches the screen.

It's turning off because of the proximity sensor. You will need to push the power button to turn screen off while on the call then push it again to bring the screen back up. This time it will not turn it's self off when you finger gets near.
