Cheapest phone to go with an Android watch?

I've persuaded my wife (a long-time apple user) to get an Android watch, so now she needs an Android phone too.
She's chosen a Samsung Galaxy Core Prime because it's cheap, but will it give the full Android Wear experience? I think it might only be running Jellybean? Can I upgrade the OS or should I tell her to choose a different phone?

I would recommend going with a Moto or Nexus device. You can pick up a Nexus 5 or 5x reasonably cheap or a Nexus 6 if she doesn't mind the size of the phone. Another option would be the Moto range. Moto G, Moto E and Moto X are all reasonably priced and run stock android so Android Wear will run effortlessly with it.
