Normally the ultimate difference is when you take that phone to other country and run it on their network it is locked. You need to get it unlock before you can actually start using it. Plus the T-Mobile or any other service mentioned phones have lower selling price in other countries, and most of the time they are also a little hard to sell. Configuration is similar in all until or unless specially specified.
