Today I switched from iphone to android. On my iphone when I got a text message, a number would appear over the message icon to indicate A) that there is a message and B) How many.

With my Nexus 6P when I get a message, the message app stays blank. Is there anyway to change this? This is because when I get a text, I hear the notification but might be busy so I dont check it. When I then check home screen and see no number or something similar over top the message icon I think I have no messages and carry on when I have many messages.

Same thing for phone icon, I cannot see I have a missed call without actually going into the app.
