Save contacts to phone, not google account

Is it possible to save contacts only to my phone, and not to my google account? I'm not given any other options when I click on the name of the google account when adding a new contact.
I have a Moto G (3rd gen) running Marshmallow

Yes you can!

Open the contacts app and add the contact. There will be an option to select which type of contact it is. For example, you can add it as a Google contact or phone contact. Select phone contact and that will be saved to the phone only.

If you have a different carrier it should the ok. The steps should be the same.
