Gear s2 3g can't send messages

The phone I have my 3g connected to doesnt have sms capabilities, so when I try replying to texts in standalone, it fails because it defaults to try and use the phones number, but when I explicitly send new message, and choose the watch button instead of the phone as the method for sending the sms, then it sends fine. How do I fix this??
