do i need my sync on all the time to receive emails?

I have just been given a samsung galaxy s4 19505 with version 5.0.1. I used to have a samsung s3 mini and did not need to have the sync setting on to receive my hotmail emails. The auto sync in the settings part of data usage also didnt need to be activated. They just automatically arrived in my inbox+ notification bar.. Am I able to do the same with the s4?..I have tried but unless the sync settings are turned on I do not receive the emails?..I am keen to try as Im sure it will help with battery consumption not having sync on all the time...??
