How do I get the back button and the multiscreen button back on either side of the home button?

On the left side of the home key there was two rectangular boxes that would pull up any active screens that were running and on the right side of the same home key there was a check mark to that could be used to back out of screens...they were both bright white. I'd like to know how to get them back.
