my galaxy s3 wont charge

my Samsung galaxy s3 wont turn on or charge, the battery is a bit bashed, could this be the issue?

I'd still leave it on the charger, back cover off, for 24 hours. And keep an eye on it - if the temperature of the battery suddenly starts going up, unplug the charger and get rid of the battery (in a safe way).
