Not able to import my photos from smartphone to laptop

I have been trying to import my photos and am unsuccessful. It does not recognize my device. And on my phone it says that there are no devices. I have refreshed the phone , nothing. can someone help, please? Donna

Make sure you're using a phone cable, not a cable that only charges. The phone's microUSB port can also be defective.
