Then I removed the case, removed battery, dried everything and put it back together. Screen went black but blue light on and small icons on base of phone work. Any thoughts?

I dropped my Nexus S in the toilet when it was on and had the very same issue. I ended up replacing the screen, but the components on the mainboard were covered with water scale and residue and it had a very short life afterwards.

If you take it apart or have someone else tear it down for screen replacement, be sure to have the boards (99% ISO/Hexane/xylene/M.E.K. wash will do the trick) cleaned. If you do it yourself, stick with the ISO unless you know how to work with solvents -- some nasty stuff in the others.
