Hi I'm a total Android newbie and still trying to get my head around it all. I have an android head unit. When trying to install apps I keep receiving a shortage of memory notification.

Internal storage I have available is 12.53gb

Sd storage I have available is
29.1gb

I have tried clearing cache and moving apps around but it's not helping at all.

Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance

1. 12.53GB isn't much storage these days, the phone could be reserving most of that for itself (and some of it may be partitioned so that you have a lot less than that to install apps to).

2. The external storage is irrelevant - apps install to internal storage, and the default for most apps is to store their data to internal storage - you have to change that last one. (You can move apps to the card, but you don't save much storage that way - pieces of the app [depending on how it was writtewn] are moved to the card, but pointers to where they were moved to are left in internal storage. If the piece moved is about the size of the pointer, you aren't saving anything.)

Use a phone with enough internal storage for the apps you need to run (and keep all data - docs, pics, songs, etc., on the card).
