Updating a rooted phone can be dangerous - as you've found out. (Whether it's unrooted or not, changes made while it was rooted can brick the phone.) Find an S3 ROM for that model S3, then follow the instructions at [Samsung] How to flash Stock ROM via ODIN (they're easier to follow than the ones at Sammobile). You'll get a fresh never-rooted ROM installed. Over the next few days the phone will update to the latest version available. Then it should register. (If not, once you have an official ROM flashed, go to your provider and ask if they can try a new SIM card.)
