Screen cracked, touch input not working - need new screen and digitizer?

We were at the beach, looking at my girlfriend's LG G3 phone and choosing songs in her music app. Suddenly, the phone popped and 2 cracks appeared across the entire screen. Weird!

Since touch input is working (it works sporadically in some areas), I think we need to order a new digitizer and screen. Does that sound like the right plan?

The phone is not under warranty. We're also open to ideas regarding why this happened? Maybe the heat of the day and a case that was too tight and didn't let the glass expand? That's my best theory.

Order a new screen WITH a digitizer attached. (Why do the work when they'll do it for free, and do it correctly?)

Why? Heat, direct sunshine, anything that heated the air inside the phone. (Spray a shoebox black (on the outside) and leave it on the beach for a few hours. Thrusting your hand inside can raise a few blisters.)
