insufficient storage on device- gmail

[AC Question]

G-mail on Samsung galaxy note 3. I cannot get new emails due to this warning: Not enough space in storage device. Delete some files and try again. I found 459 old emails and sent them to the recycling bin. The recycling bin says there are 97 emails but they will not come up so I can't delete them. Where do I find files to remove so I can receive new emails? I don't want to remove emails completely from g mail only from the phone.

Welcome to Android Central! Are you using the stock Email app, or the Gmail app? If it's the stock Email app, you're probably using the Gmail POP3 server--change to the IMAP server so that it doesn't have to download emails physically to the phone. https://support.google.com/mail/troubleshooter/1668960?hl=en
