Samsung Note 5 won't read new 64g micro sd card

[AC Question]

I have a new SanDisk micro sd card and connected it to my Note 5 with a new Leef microsd card reader - - it connects to the phone through the micro usb port. ES File Explorer sees the card but when I tap the drive it reads "Can't open file." The system file explorer won't see it nor let me write to it. I formatted the card with exFAT but it still wont read it. With an adapter the card seems to work fine on the computer. Any help would be appreciated.
