Moto E - Need Android Upgrade

[AC Question]

I recently purchased a Moto E on Straight Talk/Verizon and noticed that it's still running Android 4.4.4. I would like to upgrade this to a newer OS but Straight Talk doesn't provide upgrades for ANYTHING. I don't mind manually installing it but I need more information on how to do that. Any info would be appreciated.
