Recent apps button on S6 edge not displaying open apps how can I return it to normal?

Everytime I press the recent apps button it shows that there are no apps open even though I know full well that I had just gotten off an app please help.

Clear system cache and reboot and it will be restored. I found this solution elsewhere and don't know if it's permanent

I'm having this issue now, after installing the G920PVPS3CPG1 firmware update last night. Urghhhh.....

Clearing the cache partition didn't work..... and it's not just the "Recent Apps" button that doesn't work, there are no notifications when you go to the status bar, and clicking the "settings" button or "expand" pulldown in that area does nothing as well.

Any ideas? I'm trying to figure out how to back everything up and do a factory-reset but I really don't wanna do that.
