Why do I have to switch off my Samsung S4 to recharge it?

My Samsung S4 battery drains very fast and the only way I can recharge it is to switch it off. It is impossible to charge it otherwise...this is so strange!
I have no sd card in my phone, I have reset it but still the battery doesn't last long.
Maybe there is faulty element in the device?
Please help me if you have come across the same issue.

Hi, it could be down to a number of factors, battery use, rogue app, damaged device, damaged battery, the age of the phone. Have you tried replacing the battery? can you register an account with us and come back and post us some screen shots of your battery usage so we can see that as well?
