When searched, the ipv6 address shown on my phone comes back as google redirect. This was confirmed by sprint tec.

Is there a question in there?
If you are seeking a way to keep both data and WiFi on at the same time, there is a setting in Developer option to allow this.

The question was actually in the title. I just want to begin by finding out why my mobile network disconnects when i enable and connect to my wifi network. Is this a normal thing to have happen?

Yes it is normal, why burn your mobile data when WiFi is available. It also saves on battery drain, both of which are at premiums.

Can't help you there, I do remember several discussions concerning ipv6 and having connection conflicts but I don't remember the substance of the discussions.

    I found the discussion: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sam...-wifi-why.html
