PC failing to recogise Galaxy S6 as an external device

I've connection my Galaxy S6 to my PC by USB, but the computer doesn't pick up the phone as an external device.

Is there a setting on the phone somewhere to enable this?

Yes, when you connect the phone, swipe down the home screen to select the connection type you want (probably MTP). Your PC will also need Samsung USB drivers installed
