How do I fix call volume (not ringer) stopped working?

i have a Kyocera hydro reach android phone; i realize that it is a budget phone but the problem i'm having is with the sound in phone calls. when i place or recieve a call i cannot hear the other person. if i turn on the speakerphone function then I can hear I can also hear when the external speaker is turned on the people on the other end can hear me I just can't hear them any ideas? phone has worked fine thus far (with the exception that i am unable to root it to get rid of preinstalled nuisance apps) it just started with the sound volume issue a few days ago. I have all the volumes set on high (media/system/alarm/ringer) and the phone is not on airplane mode or safe boot. i don't remember dropping it?!? HELP

Don't know too much about Kyocera anymore (have not had one of their phones in years) BUT I found their tech support contact info on the web for you....
