Steaming internet radio from websites won't play longer than 3-4 minutes

Specifics:
LG G4 H811
Android 6.0.0 (after reset)
Chrome 52.0.2743.98 (before reset)
50.0.2661.89 (after reset)
Streaming from surfmusic de, internetradiouk com, etc. Or individual radio station sites

I have been using these sites for years without issue. The problem started about a month ago. This is NOT buffering. The player on the site stops, and stays off until I press play again. It does not matter if the screen is on or off. Gestures are off, it is not palm muting etc.

I did a factory reset as follows:
Reset
Restore from sd card backup
Do not restore settings
Do not restore updates
Do not use Google restore

This worked until I updated apps. Then the problem returned. I went to the Play Store and started "uninstalling" the unremoveable apps (it will uninstall updates but leaves the app). The culprit seems to be the Chrome update (see above).

So my question is: what setting does this update change that bugs streaming from websites? I have not been able to find any other reference to a problem like this.
