no sim card message on samsung galaxy prevail lte

There is a message that says no sim card on the main screen. I am able to search the internet. what does this message mean?

Welcome to Android Central! What carrier are you on? Are you able to make phone calls? Are you connected to wi-fi? If you don't have a valid SIM card, but are connected to a wi-fi network, then you can still browse the web.
