Device is Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 (SM-T700)

I am able to connect my bluetooth keyboard "bluetooth keyboard connected as input device", but am unable to type anything. never recieve a prompt to enter 4 digit passcode. it just connects. under settings, "text input" is set to on. under select keyboard "virtual keyboard" is set to off. under "bluetooth keyboard" "English(US) - Android keyboard" is set. Any ideas what to do? bluetooth keyboard is charged.
