Why do I have to swip the lock to see my home screen

The lock screen in its default state is Swipe. You can add a PIN or other method for security. See Settings, Lock Screen.

You should also have None, where the screen opens with the Power button

Is that a Motorola thing?

I've just checked LG G4 and Nexus 5 and the option is indeed there. I had never noticed. How do you use these Android phones anyway?
