AC Question

Whenever I record video on my S7, I hear an annoying and random "popping" sound on playback. I have had 2 replacement devices, so this problem is consistent across 3 devices.

It is not as noticeable if you upload the video to YouTube and play over a different device (e.g. my laptop). It does not occur for streaming video, it is only witnessed on playback of video I took with my S7.

Any ideas what is going on or how to fix it? Seems like a common problem with the S7, but I see little online about it and Samsung and Verizon act like they've never heard about it.

You're right. It's an audio input related problem (i.e., microphone audio circuitry). My S7 experiences it as well. I think the reason we don't see much on the Internet about the issue is because many people aren't able to discern whether the popping/crackling is produced at the audio output stage (speaker/headphones end) or the audio input stage. Most of what's out there about S7 static/popping/crackling attributes it to the internal speaker or audio output circuitry. Many folks with the issue don't go far enough with their testing to learn that it's being introduced onto the phone's recordings by the audio input circuitry/components.

The problem is frustrating. For me at least, it typically happens when my video or audio recording app hasn't been launched for an hour or more. That means that if you pull out your phone to immediately catch something on video that you didn't know would happen, the popping is most likely to be present on your recording. Subsequent recordings to the first are typically clean. And on the ones with the noise, it's present only during the first 5 seconds or so. The rest of the recording typically sounds clean.

The following thread at the Samsung support community deals with this very issue:

The last poster in the above thread claims that the second time he sent in his S7 for repair they correctly repaired the mic crackling issue. He said they fixed it wrong the first time - whatever that means. Here's what he pasted as the notes from Samsung's repair department:

Original Problem:
CALL QUALITY /SOUND - SOUND PROBLEMS - SPEAKER NOT WORKING

Problem found:
SPEAKER PHONE FAILURE - TX AUDIO - MIC

Solution:
REPLACED PBA - REPLACED COMPONENT
