why are English texts arriving as Chinese characters

Moto X Pure - Android ver. 6. Carrier: ATT. Started two weeks ago: Long texts (sent in English) are occasionally (not always) arriving as Chinese characters (not mixed with other languages - although I can't readily identify Chinese vs. Japanese characters.) Doesn't seem to happen on short texts, but it hasn't happened often enough to know for sure. Phone settings: Language is set to English. Google keyboard set to English and Spanish. No other languages enabled. Tried deleting Spanish keyboard. Turned phone off/on. Waiting to see if Chinese texts continue. Internet search indicates it is a fairly common problem. Anyone know how to resolve this?
