Why is the Google app using so much battery on my phone? If I look on usage it says it's used 22%. How can I reduce this without disabling it?

First, that's 22% of the total battery used, not 22% of the total battery power. So if you've used 10%, that's 2.2%.

Second, about half the phone is run by the Google app. They eliminated all the separate apps (around 2.2.3?) and combined them into one - so it uses most, or nearly most, of the battery being used.

I have to agree with the above poster on this one. We are running android after all... therefore, google apps in general will consume the most battery apart from your hardware and screen of course.
