Why doesnt my sd card work on my new phone

So when i put my sd card n my new phone or any device it says to format it but if i do that it will erase everthing how do i stop that from happening

Put it into a computer (with the adapter). Copy everything to the computer. Put the card back into the phone and format it. (I'm guessing, though, that the card went bad, and it won't read in a computer either.)

Welcome to Android Central! What phone were you using the card with before? Was it formatted as Internal Storage on that phone? If so, that means the card has been encrypted to work on only that phone.
