Galaxy S6 erratically recognizes transferred mp3s

AC Question

I'm trying to transfer podcasts to my phone, but it doesn't see a large portion of them.

I download podcasts of my favourite shows (star talk and radiolab) on my work PC and then transfer them to my phone with the USB cable. I drag them into the music folder, but a large portion of them won't show up in google play music or any other app I've tried.

The radiolab files seem to show up ok, but the star talk files are mostly missing.

Here's an example of the file names:

Star talk: STAS-S01E02-listening-for-aliens-with-carolyn-porco-startalk-all-stars.mp3

Radiolab: radiolab_podcast11milne.mp3

I have to do it this way because I don't have access to a wireless network, and I refuse to use the cellular network.

I've tried checking the directory for a .nomedia file, I've tried renaming the files and I've tried refreshing play music, nothing seems to work.

My phone is a Galaxy S6 using Android 6.0.1.

Any ideas?

Can you see the files in My Files? Will they play from there?
