Really liked the default app that came with the phone and I want it back! If I do a factory reset will it come back? Can I get it back without such a drastic step?
Is there a site with detailed instructions for dummies

You would need to flash Lollipop firmware to the device. A reset won't get it back

Thanks Pugs1957, can you direct me to somewhere that would describe how to do this that a dummy could follow?

BLU VIVO XL. I've been reading about rolling back to Lollipop but the instructions seem to be specific to each phone. It would take a lot of reading for me to figure out how to do this on my own...

I am not familiar with that phone but I see you will have to unlock the bootloader before you can do anything. It appears that this has not yet been achieved [ROM][Bootloader][Root] Warning! Please read… | Blu Vivo XL.
My advice would be to check out Google Play for a more suitable messaging app. Sorry I can't help further

It's possible I just don't know how to make the messaging app work like before? The one that came with the phone had a nice look and feel (buttons vibrated a little when you touched them, I could easily switch to a German keyboard, etc. Now I have Google Messenger and it's really bare bones. Would a factory reset re-sync the apps and drive an update to the message app so it looks like before. It's just hard to believe BLU would go backwards like that so I'm thinking it's just my ignorance

When you get an update, it replaces the operating system with the latest version so a factory reset will restore the last update which would be marshmallow. Some times progress is not always better IMHO
