My htc desire external speaker is not working

My htc desire 526g speakers do not work when the headphones are unplugged .they work when headphones are plugin i cant hear anything from the external speaker like ringtones notifications can only hear when the headphones are plugged in plz helpp the speakers are completely mute when the headphones are unplugged

Could there be dirt in the headphone jack that causes the phone to still consider the headphones to be plugged in? Have you tried quickly and repeatedly inserting and removing the headphones? Have you tried blowing out the headphone jack with compressed air?
