Charging cable for Nexus 6P became very hot when not attached to phone.

I unplugged my phone from my car charger; but when I return two hours later the cable was too hot to touch. It was not connected to anything during that time.

Sounds like the cable is shorted. Try another one. If your phone charged it must have happened when you unplugged it. A cable connected to nothing does not get hot.
