Samsung Galaxy S3 running 4.3 was fine yesterday but now whenever I use the Home button to close open apps, I get the message ' Unfortunately system ui has stopped. I've tried turning phone off, several times, but it hasn't made any difference. Can anyone tell me how to fix this please?

The exact same thing happened to my s3 and my husband's s4 last night. We shut our phones down hoping that would fix it, unfortunately same message received when I turned it on this morning. So far the only thing I have says to 'reboot into recovery' but to be careful or you can wipe your entire phone. Not sure yet if I am going to try that.

    Welcome.

Is the 'uninstall update' fix in the thread linked above not working for you?

Uninstalling google isn't sustainable because it keeps updating automatically, like every time the phone is turned on. My wife and I both have Samsung S3s and started getting the UI error Jan 21st. We uninstalled google search box but it came back anyway with the same error.
Obviously there needs to be another update to fix this update.

Do you have Auto Update switched on?
