Top left corner of Galaxy J7 registers taps but apps do not respond to them

AC Question

I was having trouble using the back function in many of my apps . The spot where the back arrow is placed in most apps is in the top left corner just under the notification bar. I can pull down the notification bar. I can tap anywhere else and the phone functions as it is supposed to. However I can get the back arrow or the menu or the "more" menu to function when I tap it if it is located in that top left corner. I enabled developer options and the show taps function so that my phone shows a white dot when I touch the screen. Well the white dot shows but none of the apps respond to the touch other than the white dot. Searching for a fix yielded a thread where messenger was the culprit so I disabled the app and rebooted with no success. Any ideas what to do next? I am thinking it must be a software issue if I can see the dots when i touch that area.
