"Why does Moto Z Force Android 7.0 update show my sd card is now corrupted and only offer to reformat it?"

I recently did the latest system update on 2017.01.27 with build number NCL25.86-11-4-6 after this update my sd card is being reported as corrupted. The options for external storage and internal storage both require formatting the card. I am trying to understand what has changed and frankly do not want to reformat the card unless absolutely necessary.

What has changed is that the card became corrupted. (If you were using it as internal storage, that's common, which is why it's no longer an option. If you were using it as external storage it's not as common, but if the cheaper the card, the more common it becomes.)

You could reformat it, but it probably won't last long. (SD cards fail due to the number of times they're written to, and yours has already failed, so it's probably on its last legs - if it will format at all.)

Don't worry about losing anything that's on the card - it's already lost. Next time, buy a better card. (I have SanDisk cards that are less than 1GB that are still working - pretty useless, but after 15 years of constant use with no failure, I can't complain.)
