Why is my phone's system taking up so much memory?!

I have an HTC One m8 and it's pretty messed up. It can't hold a charge anymore, but that's not why I'm here... My phone battery ran out one day and once I plugged it back in it said that HTC Sense Home and number of other apps weren't responding. So I looked on Google Play Store and found out that almost everything on my phone needed to be updated again. The problem is, my phone says it's system is taking up over 25GB's of the 32GB's it comes with!! Now I can't download or update anything without removing something first. Why is my phone's system taking up so much memory?! BTW, before all happened, I was only using up to 8-10GB's of memory.
