How can I spoof an sms with specific number?

I want to use someone's phone number to send a text as a harmless prank for my friend.

The Play Store has plenty of apps to spoof messages, but I don't recall seeing any that will do what you want. Not sure if it is possible.

Perhaps it's illegal, and so made impossible.

Unlike being able to spoof caller ID by the system letting you put anything into the caller ID text field, I would suspect that the "sent from" phone number cannot be spoofed for SMS messages.

The reason that you can spoof message to your phone is that the fake message is just being inserted into the message database on your phone and was not actually sent.
